Concept / application

the concept was to form a device that would have multiple inputs to make a survey from collecting data.
the unit device would ultimately influence the space through data output.

Method

giving a score of HP, P, LP and F, the user will input their desire marks into the system. this will be calculated
and accumulated to give output through the same unit.

Input

- DISTANCE SONAR detects the user approaching and turns the system on
- LASER INPUT allows the user to pick up a laser pointer and input their scores directly
- EMAIL allows the user to go back to their desk and send information in to the system
- MOBILE allows the user to sent their desire information into the system at their prefer time.

Output

- UNIT light will blink according to the information inputted, and will blink also when giving a accumulative score.
- UNIT flexinol will move in the direction that the laser pointer is pointing at, to indicate that the score has being inputted

Processing

the processing power lies in 3 systems
- the JAVA programming which reads the webcam information and translates into the system
- the microprocessor which reads the distance sonar information and turns the system on.
- the max/msp/jitter programming which reads the email/mobile input from the web, and translates it into the system
- the communication between the 2 microcontrollers to allow for multiple systems to interact with each other.

Other possible applications

couple directions:
- using mobile devices to control any system in the future, ie. moving walls, automatic shading...etc.
- using tracking (laser pointers) to control any part of the wall in real-time.
- a wall system full of judgment units controlled via mobile or tracking devices.

By breathing on the Infobreath "cybernetic" lilly, people trigger a flurry of text, making visible the wireless internet traffic passing through the air. Rigged with a breath sensor and connected to the Carnivore sniffer, the flower is cued in to the wireless network flowing in the space surrounding it. The plant absorbs and analyzes this information, and releases those packets in a form comprehensible to humans.

A piezo breath sensor registers the breath. The microcontroller attached to the plant converts these signals for the computer and the carnivore client captures network traffic through the computer’s wireless card. 4. the int
Infobreath imagines a world in which the carbon dioxide we exhale carries comprehensible information, and envisions the transfer of carbon dioxide to oxygen within a plant as a transfer of information: an information ecosystem. It imagines the plant, buffeted by streams of wireless data, sifting through those pings and packets for the few elements sent from one human to another, and reflecting those living packets of internet data back to us, in an elemental attempt at communication.

Kinetic variable:

The idea is to control the pattern and color of lights in the floor according to the movement over the surface.

Smart material:

Piezoelectric : This material will be used under the ground surface as sensor. The concept is to make the kinetic system as energy efficient as possible. To do so, the piezoelectric material will react to the vibrations of the floor movement, triggering a reaction in the Micro controller which will then control the pattern in the floor lighting.

New design for the mobile "Hauer" tile:

Now that we have the measures and a system that we think will work with enough leverage we are going to build the next prototype on thursday. The wheel will give us the needed cantilever and also isolate the pianowire against the Flexinol wire with the electrical current. The decision to make one end free moving inside a tube resulted from problems with friction in the earlier prototype. Below are some sketches that we made in designing the new prototype. We will need four wires per tile and expect to build a field of six tiles (three operational and three dummies). The setupt will be vertical with a lightsource behind it and a frame surrounding it to block the light from shining around the corners. Exact measures follow on wednesday. We need 8 more Flexinol wires of the type we got in the beginning, so if anybody has any over please contact us.

Energy Taxing

The Energy Taxing project endeavors to take negligible amounts of energy from each user as they open a door, in this way a small tax is imposed on each person. This tax can then be accumulated to produce a useful amount of electricity. Specifically, it is our interest to use latent energy from existing building systems (chemical – garbage, thermal – computers, or motion – doors) and convert it into productive energy which can then be utilized within the building, thus increasing the overall autonomy of the system. For our prototype, we would like to use the harnessed energy to fuel an educational display. The display would be used during the end of the year exhibition to inform people of the potential of architecture to be self sustaining.
We will use electromagnets as a means of harnessing energy from the use of a typical door. Our unit will attach onto a door hinge that uses a spring closer to incite motion in the electromagnets. In this manner each time the door is used, a small percentage of the energy could be captured and put towards another source. For the purpose of this class, the output will instantaneously be utilized for a LED display. In the future the energy captured from this motion could be stored in a battery for later use.
After our initial experiments in chemical, thermal and motion energy harnessing, we determined that motion is the most convenient, accessible, and efficient means of collecting the energy required to illuminate LEDs. The Dynamo Flashlight effectively produces enough instantaneous energy to power a small light (or multiple LED’s) with a simple hand crank, spring, and electromagnet. We created a simplified version of the Dynamo’s electromagnet called a Film Can generator which produces enough electricity to light one LED instantaneously, by hand-shaking the device. However, the light flashed on and off as the magnet passed through the wire coil which is less desirable than the continuous electric flow (and light) produced by rotating magnets around a wire coil, as in the Dynamo Flashlight.
Our next step is to harness energy continuously like the Dynamo and cheaply like the Film Can generator. We will use the same type of spring, gears and crank/hinge as the Dynamo to rotate the magnets. We are experimenting with spring door hinges and spring door closers to create the initial energy source, and then using this energy to propel the electromagnets by use of gears into continuous motion, producing the most bang for your buck. Our motion energy harnessing system (to be named) will be attached to a mock up door and an output will be displayed as a light installation. The device will be as inconspicuous as possible.
We will also collect and analyze data in order to determine how much energy could be produced cumulatively from the doors in Avery Hall, as a means to exemplify the amount of energy that can be harnessed from the doors of a building. We will also produce data to show the amount of energy required to power typical building fixtures (lights, small appliances, computers) for the sake of comparison.

This is the first try to understand the working inside a Hauer tile when one wants to make it move and change the light it is letting through.

Here is a flattened version that should provide the needed cantilever for the flexinol. Sadly it turned out that piano wire is too fickle in its behaviour to be of much use in a flat shape in this configuration.

The following two images show two experiments to work with the 3d shape and to insert flexible material between the moving parts. The used pantyhose proved to be too sturdy to yield to the pull we exerted and the paperflaps were not to be controlled in a suitable way. So these experiments showed that this was not the way to do it.

This is the last development and it should be the thing that works. This small prototype is functioning manually but a bigger one is being built at the moment with flexinol to pull up two metal wires that cross in the middle and make the fabric bulge. Through the double aperture on both sides light can shine through the tile. The material that we plan to use will be spandex, black for the outside and white for the inside to better achieve a glow effect once the tile is activated.

RESEARCH PROPOSAL: SYNAESTHETIC SPACE

Project Description
Synaesthetics is the human ability to experience the senses interconnectivity or rather simultaneously. For example, some individuals can recall words or numbers by the association of recognizable colors and vise versa. It is a condition that allows some humans to experience reality by the connectivity of either two or multiple senses simultaneously.

Cybernetics is according to Grodon Pask a conversation; a generative activity that gives identity to participants and leads to what is new.

The project interest arose this past fall through a studio at Columbia Universtiy where I proposed a New Warburg Institute in New York City. The basis of the project was a rule set device modeled after Turing’s Enigma Machine whose combinatory ability allowed me to arbitrarily assign dual and multiple senses to the programs of the project. The investigative part was to see how the ability of recall could allow for a more participatory experience of research by certification of the sense combinations. The ability to use a cybernetic synaesthetic further mapped the interaction hence a better method of archiving. This semester, in the course Living Architecture, I have the ability to engage with the actual technology to bring the project basis under greater scrutiny and experiment in the realization of such synaesthetic experiences. The project for this semester is not the literal manifesting of last semester’s recall programs but will deal further into the enhanced cybernetic sense experience.

The course objective is to experiment on kinetic technologies using simple circuit responsive electronics, either manufactured or reassemble cheap make shift electronics, from toys for example. The initial research of components has yielded various electrical sensors; movement sensors, ultra sound sensors, light responsive, and LCD screens.

Such research has been preformed previously but it was more directed towards the amplification of the senses. While my interest is in the actual experience that can be achieved by the interaction of a synaesthetic living architecture. The final product will be a Cyberenetic/Synaestheice Interface a correlation and experience that has never been performed before. The difference to my precedent is that I am assaying the problem as a cybernetic mechanism not just one that propagates the senses but rather architecture and individual conversing – finding- recognizing through syneaethetic experience.

Phase 4: Design Build Installation

The final of the project will be elaborated as an installation at Columbia’s end of the year exhibition of course work. Its manifestation will be a spatial interpretation of Charles Bauldelaire’s Correspondences poem, a poem embedded with his theory of synaesthetics. It provides a strong experiential basis for such an interconnected task.

Agenda: Mood
Mood conveys information – about an individual, about an individual in relation to a larger group, and about cultural values. We intend to take the concept of a mood ring and apply it to a spatial response – that an individual’s “mood” can animate architecture and that the amount of movement communicates what that mood is.

The mood ring measures mood through body temperature. Here, mood will be measured through color input with the idea that the colors you wear are indexes not only of an individual mood, but also of social custom and cultural tendency. For example, do architects at the final show mostly wear black? Can this project actually produce a mood? Might architects begin to question their choice in clothing relative to our larger culture?

Guidelines:
Movement occurs in a field rather than a surface
The field is a registration/index of an individual, producing unique output
Movement produces shifts in color/density as a registration of mood
Output is an abstraction rather than equivalent representation
Produce a catalogue of collective responses, preferably through the same medium

RESEARCH PROPOSAL: NON-BINARY INPUT DEVICES
Research sensors that detect color to produce a differentiated response in the movement of the piano wire as a result of the processing code.

Initial Prototyping Goal:
Understand the way in which the sensor receives input and the code required to process variable rather than binary input.

When a black piece of paper is placed in front of the color sensor, little movement occurs in the piano wire. When a white piece of paper is placed in front of the color sensor, the piano wire moves a greater amount.

Research Contribution Goal:
UN Studio has spatialized information through printed graphics. However, this production was only a representation, fixed in both space and time.

Our project seeks to move beyond static representation by utilizing physical space to convey information collected and updated in real-time.

RESEARCH PROPOSAL

PROJECT: we are proposing to design and build a prototype for a flooring system that that is able to transform from a flat surface into a surface articulated by a series of ridges that will act as seating (chaise lounge like) components.

RESEARCH AGENDA:
The system we are proposing would require us to collect information on the following:
semi-rigid flooring material that will allow for motion (flexibility) as well as to provide support in order to create a sitting area.
different types weight sensitive sensor (The flooring system should be able to rest completely flat until it is activated by applying pressure to a weight sensitive sensor which in return should activate the compression of flexinol wires in order to cause the flooring material to bend and create a back-rest.)

+ COMMON ARCHITECTURAL ELEMENT
- For a starting point we will use a semi-rigid ground covering (probably rubber or silicone based) as a common architectural element.

+ MOVEMENT
- Our intention is to create a flooring system that has the ability to move and change form with the assistance of flexinol wires in order to create a series of seating components.
We will conduct research into both mechanical systems and responsive materials.

+ SPATIAL IMPACT
- Our intention is to transform the space physically so that it is interactive and functional. By causing the floor to morph into a seat the transitional space should convert into one for social gathering.

+ REALIZATION
Our expectations are to build a scaled working model of the proposed.
We will build it.
We will not be limited to computer models and animations.
